Typical Qualifications
Qualifications:
Minimum Education: An associate’s degree in a criminal justice or social science related field.
Minimum Work Experience: 2 years of full-time work experience as a counselor, probation officer, parole officer, case manager, corrections officer, resident monitor, or similar position.
Other:
Knowledge: Have a basic understanding of Ohio laws pertaining to probation/community control, intervention in lieu of conviction, diversion, pre-trial bond, misdemeanor offenses, municipal courts in Ohio, local community resources, cognitive behavioral therapy, evidence-based practices as they relate to the offender population, and Microsoft Office products such as excel, word, and outlook.
Abilities: Work within a team, make decisions regarding supervision matters, problem solve, learn and comprehend new concepts quickly, and perform in a stressful work environment.
Skills: Operate Microsoft Office products such as word, outlook, and excel, operate a motor vehicle, communicate well both verbally and written.
Supplemental Information
Salary: As set by the City of Newark Council in the City of Newark Statement of Policy for Hourly Non-Bargaining Unit Employees.

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, bend, and reach. The employee must occasionally physically restrain a client. Use hands and fingers to search. Using a lifting motion, assist someone from a prone position on the ground to his/her feet (such as a handcuffed or moderately incapacitated person). Walk up a flight of stairs, run quickly up or down a flight of stairs, lift up to 50 pounds, participate in various physical trainings such as subject control/unarmed self-defense, taser, pepper spray, and/or firearm, and potentially engage in non-lethal or lethal force depending on a specific situation.
Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus to comprehend written work instructions, prepare, and maintain written records. Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing abilities required include those that permit the employee to discern verbal instructions and communicate effectively in person and by telephone.

The working conditions described here are representative of those conditions encountered by an employee during the course of employment with the City of Newark. Conditions encountered are offices, courts, correctional facilities, police departments, probation departments, offenders’ homes, specimen collection lab, rain, sleet, hail, snow, extreme heat, extreme cold, thunder, lightning and various training environments such as gymnasiums, outdoor shooting range, in-house training room, Fraternal Order of Police training room, conference centers, hotels, etc. (this is not an exhaustive list).
