Position Description: |
Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities (Transportation Officer): - Provide for the safety and security of youth in custody, those attending appointments, and during transports.
- Provide transportation and monitoring of youth in Court custody to and from detention facilities and the Ohio Department of Youth Services.
- Provide transportation to counseling and medical appointments for youth in custody or otherwise involved with the Juvenile Court.
- Conduct searches of youth in custody in accordance with applicable laws and the Court’s transportation and security policies.
- Monitor drug and alcohol screens when requested by Court Services personnel.
- Maintain logs of transports.
- Conduct vehicle and surveillance equipment maintenance checks.
- Provide other functions and duties as required by the Director/Deputy Director of Court Services.
Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities (On-Call Court Services Officer): - Respond to requests from local law enforcement on an urgent or emergency basis regarding issues of public safety.
- Exercise emergency placement decision making after hours based on information collected and in line with the Court’s guidelines to ensure youth, families, and the community as a whole are safe pending further hearing.
- Utilize effective communication, conflict resolution, and de-escalation skills in working with youth, families, and the public.
- Conduct searches of youth, personal property, and homes in accordance with applicable laws when deemed appropriate.
- Maintain a working knowledge of the Ohio Revised Code and Juvenile Rules with regard to Juvenile Court procedures.
- Effectuate arrests of youth under the jurisdiction of the Juvenile Court pursuant to applicable laws and the Court’s policies and procedures.
- Complete paperwork in an efficient and timely manner relevant to the placement of a youth.
- Effectively communicate with youth, families, detention and treatment facilities, and staff when coordinating placement, completing safety assessments, and/or facilitating transportation for youth.
- Install and provide ongoing maintenance of the electronic monitoring devices for youth.
- Assist Court Services staff with monitoring, security, curfew checks, contacts with families, and any other after-hours requests.
- Collect information and evaluate on a case to case basis to determine least restrictive environment for youth while weighing any safety risk to the youth, families, and the community at large, especially in dealing with allegations of violence in the home, school threats, and unruliness.
- Conduct OYAS Detention tool when applicable.
- Gather information on each youth, document, and make appropriate recommendations in reference to emergency services.
- Demonstrate regular and reliable attendance and communication.
- Provide other functions and duties as required by the Director/Deputy Director of Court Services
- Perform other “in-office” duties as needed.

Brief Description: |
Summary: The Transportation/On-call Court Services Officer position is a dual role at the Licking County Juvenile Court that provides transportation for juveniles in custody to facilities, appointments, and court hearings, along with on-call duties such as monitoring, supervision, and emergency response on behalf of the Court Services Department outside of normal business hours. This position additionally provides Court security services for the Court. |
Job Prerequisites: |
Qualifications: High school diploma required; associates degree in criminal justice/social sciences preferred; an understanding of the Juvenile Court system preferred; an ability to work with difficult people is required; decision-making, problem solving, organizational skills, and necessary skills with technology such as computer-based programs are all required. Skills and Characteristics required: - Ability to connect with challenging and difficult people, while providing empathetic, non-judgmental, and culturally competent interventions.
- Understanding of the juvenile justice system and how it interacts with a wide array of other systems in which Court involved youth and families come into contact.
- Ability to reflect the values and professionalism of the Licking County Juvenile Court in interactions with Court employees and with the community at all times.
- Maintain the confidentiality of youth and families involved with the Court while treating those involved with the Court with dignity and respect.
- Demonstrate reasonable judgment in times of crisis and high stress while maintaining a high-performance level in stressful and emotionally challenging conditions and circumstances. Must remain flexible in a fast-paced setting where circumstances change frequently throughout the day.
- Must utilize conflict resolution and conflict management skills to de-escalate tense situations between youth, their families, and others.
- Ability to synthesize information from different sources and draw appropriate conclusions.
- Must demonstrate teamwork on a variety of teams which may include Court staff, service providers, youth, family, and other stakeholders to achieve case plan goals through effective communication and collaboration across systems.
- Uses interpersonal skills to develop positive relationships with youth and families to drive interventions and achieve case plan goals through consensus when possible.
Physical Demands: Must be of physical condition to detain and/or arrest youth when necessary. Certificates, License, Registration: Valid State Operator’s License is required. Work Environment: Typical work hours for this position are evening and weekends, however, some daytime hours may be required. This position is a hybrid remote opportunity as some work can be performed remotely.
