LICKING COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE CITIZEN’S ACADEMY
CO-HOSTED BY THE
INSTITUTE FOR PUBLIC SAFETY AT CENTRAL OHIO TECHNICAL COLLEGE.

Have you ever wondered what takes place during a typical day at the Licking County Sheriff's Office, what you should do on traffic stop or the proper way to mark your property for identification purposes in case of theft? Have you ever had questions about basic law or what programs are offered by the Sheriff's Office? Now is your chance to learn everything you ever wanted to know.

Along with the Institute for Public Safety at Central Ohio Technical College, the Licking County Sheriff's Office is co-hosting an opportunity for you to participate in our next Citizen's Academy. This is a free, 13-week program that will offer information on Patrol Operations, Victim's Rights, Sex Crimes, different divisions within the Sheriff's Office, and much more. The classes will be held on Thursday nights from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm (depending on the program content). Included in the program will be a tour of the 911 Center and the current Licking County Justice Center. Participants will also be given an opportunity to ride-a-long with a Deputy during the Academy and meet Basic Police Academy cadets. Graduates of the program will get a certificate of completion at a ceremony on the last day of class.

"I am very proud of the program that we've developed and feel privileged to be presenting it to our community in collaboration with Kevin Reardon and the Institute for Public Safety at the Central Ohio Technical College. This is an exciting partnership and opportunity for the citizens of Licking County to have positive contact with Law Enforcement in a professional, yet fun, environment and to learn about the day-to-day operations of our office," said Sheriff Randy Thorp.

"COTC is proud to be working with the Licking County Sheriff's Office to host the Citizens Academy. Nothing can be more important than citizens being informed and prepared to help the law enforcement community protect the lives of Licking County residents", said Kevin Reardon, Director of the Institute for Public Safety at Central Ohio Technical College. "As an institution of learning, we are honored to be able to partner with Sheriff Randy Thorp to provide a great opportunity for people in Licking County to become educated, informed, and work cooperatively with law enforcement officials to make their community safer and a better prepared place to live and work in the future".

The Citizen's Academy has been offered five times by the Licking County Sheriff's Office, but this is the first collaborative effort with the Institute for Public Safety at Central Ohio Technical College. This exciting opportunity is being offered to the citizens of Licking County that are served by the Licking County Sheriff's Office. You must be at least 18 years of age, complete an application, pass a criminal background check, have no felonies or violent misdemeanors and be in possession of a valid Ohio Driver's License.

Applications may be picked up between the hours of 8:00 am and 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, in the Sheriff's Administrative Lobby or by clicking the below link. Applications will then be reviewed and qualified persons will be notified prior to the start of the Academy. It will be held at Central Ohio Technical College’s main campus in Newark. Dates may be adjusted due to holidays and/or emergencies. Light refreshments will be provided.
