A Brief History:

Prior to Ohio’s induction into the Union in 1803, the recorder’s office was responsible for recording and registering various transactions related to land. In 1803 the Ohio General Assembly made moves to retain the functions of the recorder’s office by mandating that each county have a recorder appointed by a judge of the common pleas court. The position changed to an elective position in 1829. Over time the recorder’s office has been given responsibilities relating to recording the powers of attorney, mechanics’ liens, soldiers’ discharges, leases and financing statements. Gradually the term of the county recorders’ offices has increased to 4 years.

Recorder Function:

The Licking County Recorder’s Office is responsible for the recording of all deeds, mortgages, and conveyance of lands and buildings within the county’s boarders. Additionally, all maps and plats of newly laid out villages are recorded and all records from other counties concerning land sales or conveyances which affect titles in Licking County are transcribed by the county recorder’s office. Currently the recorder’s office also has responsibilities relating to recording the powers of attorney, mechanics’ liens, soldiers’ discharges, leases and financing statements.
